Once home to Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive repair facility in the southeastern United States, the North Carolina Transportation now is the showcase for all kinds of transportation history:  rail, flight, auto, and more.  Built in 1898, the historic Barber Junction train station houses the site’s Visitor’s Center.  The Bob Julian Roundhouse is the largest remaining roundhouse in North America, and is home to locomotives, passenger rail cars, and a full-size replica Wright Flyer. The massive Back Shop, where steam locomotives were once completely overhauled, now houses rail cars of the past, antique automobiles, fire trucks, and the restoration of the Piedmont Airlines’ Potomac Pacemaker DC-3. The Flue Shop houses the museum’s Bumper to Bumper automotive exhibit.  A working, full-size turntable, once used to re-locate engines to different bays of the Roundhouse, is in the midst of it all!

Please join NCHE for this exceptional opportunity.  Our special discounted admission includes access to all exhibit areas, a train ride (not usually available on weekdays), and a “spin” (very slow spin!) on the locomotive turntable.  Check-in time will be between 9:15 and noon and you may stay as long as you like.  Picnic areas are available on a first come/first served basis free of charge.

Tickets are $7.95 for children 3 and older; $9.95 for adults.  Children 2 and younger are free.  (Regular admission is $9+tax for 3-12 yr olds; $13+tax for 13 and older.)  Tickets may be purchased until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2021 or while supply lasts.  This is a rain or shine, self-paced field trip. 10 a.m. train tickets are still available. 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. train rides are sold out. Tickets are transferable to others for the same day but are non-refundable.
