PLEASE NOTE: The Robotics Class is SOLD OUT

REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED FOR THIS FIELD TRIP

Discovery Place Science is an innovative, hands-on Museum in Uptown Charlotte that encourages scientific exploration and creativity. Their numerous aquariums will captivate your senses as you learn about the fascinating world of underwater creatures; state-of-the-art lab spaces provide space to design, create and innovate; and the indoor rainforest allows you to experience the sights and sounds of the jungle up close.  Current special exhibits that you may experience at your own pace include:

Being Me: find out how exercise keeps bodies in top form; shrink to the cellular level thanks for Virtual Reality; use the Vein Viewer to see the vessels in your hands; get an in-depth look at the human body with real plastinated specimens, including a human femur, brain, heart, and more! Take an up-close look at body systems such as the digestive, muscular, reproductive, and others, including some of the individual organs that make up these systems.

Fantastic Frogs: Frogs are masters of disguise as well as escape artists in order to attract mates, deceive predators and more. This exhibition uses spectacularly-colored wall and panel illustrations to depict how frogs live lives full of action, constantly struggling to fend off foes. It also features interactive learning games, scientific videos and, of course, plenty of live frogs!

Top Secret: License to Spy: Based around a James Bond-style fantasy of exotic locations, high-tech equipment and, of course, a mystery to solve, Top Secret: License to Spy focuses on the science and technology of spying and espionage. On arrival at the exhibition, the visitor is presented with a scenario and six suspects.

In addition to the general exhibits, our tour package includes the following upgrade options:

Upgrade 1:  Attend the IMAX film, The Great Bear Rain Forest.   This 96 million acre tract in Canada’s Pacific Northwest is a treasure of animal and marine life, including the elusive and cream colored Kermode Bear (a kind of black bear that may have white cubs), an animal sacred to the native T’simshian people.  The film explores the fjords, islands, and forests as well as animal life of the region.  Teacher guide provided.  50 minute run time.

Upgrade 2:  Intro to Robotics (target age 3rd-5th grade):   Students will become programmers in this crash course into robotics.  By the end of the class, the students’ robots will navigate a maze!  50 minute class time. Due to space limitations, parents and siblings will not be in the classroom.

Upgrade 3:  Energetic Contraptions (target age 6th-8th grade):   Brace yourself for physics in action! Discover how catapults work and what their uses are both in the past and today. Students will build catapults and then compete with each other to see whose will perform the best!  50 minute class time.  Due to space limitations, parents and siblings will not be in the classroom.
