Join NCHE as we visit Tryon Palace for our first field trip of the 2022-23 school year!  Transport yourself and your children back to the year 1770 when the British colonial governor, William Tryon, lived and ruled from New Bern.  In 1775, the Palace became the center of colonial government with the beginning of the Revolutionary War and remained North Carolina’s capitol until it was moved to Raleigh in 1792.  Sixteen acres of gardens surround Tryon Palace and the grounds also host a Revolutionary War Encampment where you can talk with and ask questions of soldier re-enactors.

Our day’s visit will include a tour of the palace and kitchen led by historical interpreters in period costume and time to visit the Encampment and the gardens.  More of North Carolina’s history will be explored at the North Carolina History Center.  There, the Pepsi Family Center challenges imagination and learning as students travel back in time to an eastern North Carolina coastal village in the 1830s.  This exhibit was designed for kids and their families to interact together and learn history through hands-on experiences.  Activities include working as crew members on the SS Snapdragon to working in a turpentine distillery, cooking, and assisting local merchants in the dry goods store and the print shop. Plan to allow about 4-5 hours to gain the most from this day.

Our discounted admission rates, which include all of the above:
Adults:  $17.50
Students (K-12): $9.55
Preschoolers (0-4 yo):  Free
Tickets may be purchased until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday September 25, 2022 or while supply lasts.  This is a limited admission field trip.  Check-in time for this rain or shine field trip is 9:30-10 a.m. on the back patio of the palace.  Families will bring picnic lunches (storage facility to keep them cool is available) and picnic on the south lawn at the rear of the Palace or on the patio overlooking the river.  Tickets are transferable to others for the same day but are non-refundable.
