NCHE Athletics: Elissa Dawson Will Attend UNC on Diving Scholarship

Elisabeth Andrews Dawson (Elissa) is the daughter of Mark and Robin Dawson of Durham. Elissa has been homeschooled all her life. She is a national level diver who has been diving for eight years on club teams. Elissa received scholarship offers from UNC, Duke, Kentucky and Tennessee and signed her National Letter of Intent to dive for UNC.

NCHE Athletics: Cabarrus Claims State Championship in Boys Soccer

The 2013 NCHEAC Boys Soccer State Championship was held in Winston-Salem, October 18-19 at the Sara Lee Soccer Complex. Six teams competed in the tournament and seeding of those teams was based on regular season results. The regular season consisted of two conferences, east and west, with both conferences containing three teams each. In the west conference, the teams were Asheville, Cabarrus County and Forsyth County. Fayetteville and two teams from Wake County, East Wake and Northeast Wake made up the east conference.

NCHE Athletics: Asheville Three-Peats in Varsity Volleyball at the State Tournament

Three athletic programs—Asheville, Greensboro and North Wake—claimed a state title at 2013 NCHEAC Girls Volleyball tournaments held in Winston-Salem, October 18-19. East and West Regional tournaments were played on Friday at Piedmont International University (PIU) and at the Gateway YWCA. The top two finishers on Friday from each region’s divisions (middle school, junior varsity and varsity) advanced to play on Saturday in the state championship tournaments, which were held at Salem Baptist Christian School, and again at PIU.

NCHE Athletics: A Photo Finish!

The NCHE Athletic Commission (NCHEAC) Cross Country Championships ended with the closest race in our history in the boys division with only 0.53 seconds separating first and second place. James Dorris of the Asheville Trailblazers passed Hunter Sawyers of the Surry Runnin’ Patriots on the final 100 yards of the 5k course to claim the championship with a rain-slowed time of 18:22.38. In the girls division, Nan Gordon of the Forsyth Hawks bested teammate Leslie Woodley by 12 seconds and finished at 20:31.57.

NCHEAC to Offer Fencing

NCHE is excited to announce that NCHE Athletic Commission (NCHEAC) is starting a fencing league as of fall 2013 with a league tournament in February.

Fencing has been growing in popularity for a number of years. There have been homeschooled students playing on recreation teams and competing against public schools for several years. NCHE is pleased to say that we are now able to offer this sport its own league through the NCHEAC.

There are currently coaches in place for Buncombe County, Durham County, Forsyth County, Guilford County, New Hanover County and Surry County.

Homeschooler Patrick Geotze Signs Professional Contract with the Boston Red Sox

Patrick Goetze, son of Kenny and Debra Goetze of Zebulon, NC, signed a professional contract with the Boston Red Sox in early July.

 

2013 NCHE Athletic Commission Holds Second Annual State Swim Meet

On February 9, NCHE Athletic Commission (NCHEAC) sponsored the second annual state swim meet with fifty-two swimmers representing teams in Asheville, Clinton and Raleigh, along with seven independent swimmers from various areas of the state. Both the boy’s and girl’s championships were won by the Raleigh Seahawks. The meet was conducted under National Federation of High School Rules, and the meet officials were NC Swim Certified Officials. NCHEAC has initiated plans to secure NC Swim sanctioning for the annual meet in 2014.

NCHEAC Basketball Champions Played in February

The 2013 NCHE Athletic Commission Basketball Championships were played in February. February 15-16 the eastern regional took place in Wake Forest, while the western regional was in Winston-Salem. The top two teams in each division advanced to the state final four at Greensboro College on February 22-23.

Asheville Repeats as State Champion in All Three Volleyball Divisions

For the second consecutive year, the Asheville Trailblazers have swept all three divisions in girls volleyball at the NCHEAC State Championships.

2012 Cross Country Meet Produces Faster Times

On October 20, the 2012 NCHE Athletic Commission Cross Country Meet was held in Winston-Salem. We had nearly fifty percent more participants this year than in 2011 with a total of sixty-seven runners
